Maintaining perfect nail and hand health isn’t always top-of-mind for men. However, maintaining healthy hands and nails is as important for men as it is for women. The good news is that – with a few simple steps, and the right products – men can start to have better-looking hands and nails in no time.
Below are a few quick hand and nail care tips for men:
- Use hand soap formulated for men1
If your hands tend to be on the dirty side, try a men’s hand soap that allows for a deeper clean. If dry skin is an issue, look for a hand soap that contains a moisturizing element, as well. Keep in mind that when water evaporates from the skin, it takes moisture with it; so after washing your hands, be sure to dry them completely. - Use hand cream formulated for men1
After your hands have been dried, applying a hand cream can lock in and maintain the moisture needed to keep your hands and nails from drying out. If you suffer from extremely dry hands, look for a hand cream — lotions are meant for more normal skin. Gels can help with oily skin. Additionally, any cream, lotion or gel with SPF 30 (or above) may help reduce sun spots — especially on the backside of your hands. Finally, rub lotion into your nail and cuticle areas to keep them moisturized, and to avoid brittle nails.2
Use a pumice stone for calluses1
If you work with your hands or commonly do a lot of heavy lifting, you may be prone to calluses on your hands. Depending on the severity of your calluses, they may tear apart and make your hands feel rough. One solution to prevent calluses from forming is to wear gloves. However, if you already have calluses, try soaking your hands in warm water for 10 minutes to soften them. Then, use a pumice stone to carefully remove any dead skin from the calluses. Finally, apply a moisturizer to soften the area.
